Cell, my recent collaboration with James Alliban, has been out for a few weeks now, and it’s been interesting reading the reactions to it. It was designed with a degree of deliberate ambiguity in order to allow visitors to bring their own thoughts to the piece,  but I thought that some people may be interested to hear my take on it. I’m very open to other interpretations, and welcome criticism and...

These guys are graduating this year from my old unit at the Bartlett school. They are amazingly talented, I can’t recommend this event highly enough! http://www.factoryfifteen.com/ Factory Fifteen is a design studio specialising in film, animation and architectural representation. I’m a little bit late to this, but probably worth a blog post; this is an augmented space concept video, from glass manufacturer Corning. It has the corporate sheen of all of these commissioned videos, and is therefore too idealistic for my taste, but its well produced and does a great job of showing some of the current thinking behind ubiquitous computing.

bossarica - NEON SIGN My new music video for Japanese electro-bossa band bossarica. This was a very ambitious project considering our low budget and limited resources, and a lot of sweat, tears and hours went into it (luckily no blood though). It combines 2D and 3D compositing with live-action projection mapping, which we were experimenting with for the first time. The lyrics to the song are a...

Things That Architecture Wants To Be #1 →
A short clip from the BBC documentary ‘Human Planet’, following inuit mussel hunters underneath the arctic sea ice. Highly subjective, but I feel like this is one of the things architecture has wanted to be for the last 50 years.. organic, temporal, chaotic, ephemeral, heart-pounding.. thanks BBC ♡

An amazing thing
An amazing thing happened the other day.. Bruce Sterling sent me an email to tell me that William Gibson had (kind of) written about my film. It was a genuine pinch-myself-to-see-if-i’m-awake moment, the equivalent of Coco Chanel telling you that Louis Vuitton tried on your bag (if you’re really into handbags, that is). If Neal Stephenson posts a comment, I’ll admit that...

Lebbeus Woods: Drawings, Stories →
One of the locals we spoke to explained its history this way: “In this town, we have the philosophy, build a building any way you want to, then we’ll move in and figure out how to live in it!” At this we just shrugged. “Isn’t that the way it always is? We’re born into a world we didn’t create and we just have to learn how to live in it!” She laughed, a little ruefully, and said, “Sure. But...

two more dates..
Short and Sweet 3D is running again at the Barbican on the 12th of November, and at Encounter Festival in Bristol on the 19th of November. It’s a really diverse programme, very interesting to see how 3D is being used in various ways for short film; Augmented City 3D will be screened at both events. Be sure to check it out if you missed it last time around!

Alpha-Ville / Visionary Cities →
The first Alpha Ville film festival is opening tomorrow evening (Friday 17th) at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. I will be screening both Augmented City and Domestic Robocop at some point in the programme, and my (ex) tutor Nic Clear will be presenting some work from Unit 15 at the Bartlett. Alpha Ville are also running a competition, for which Augmented City is a finalist. Its based on...

Toynebee Tiles →
An inside joke with no-one inside? How postmodern. What makes this mystery so fascinating is that, unlike traditional street art, it no longer embodies a clear social or political statement by a single author. Instead, it has taken on a life of its own, one in which the medium has truly become the message—these plaques continue replicating, driven, presumably, by several people acting...

Surreal House →
The recent ‘Virtual Worlds’ screening (see below) was part of an exhibition at the Barbican called Surreal House. It’s an expansive exhibition focused on the influence of surrealism on space, and placed in this context its interesting to rediscover some well known films, sculptures and buildings as surrealist explorations. The collection is huge; I was about to leave when I...

Virtual Worlds →
One of my films (not sure which one) is being screened again at the Barbican tomorrow, not in the cinema this time, but the art gallery. It’s part of an event called ‘Virtual Worlds’, which includes a “bewildering, disorientating and psychedelic architectural tour that explores the surreal side of the Barbican Centre”. Not sure if I’m up for dropping acid in...

Augmented City on Wallpaper* →
My as-yet-unreleased 3D film ‘Augmented City’ has been featured on the Wallpaper website, with its very own page and everything. It is the follow-up to Domestic Robocop, and I will officially release it in September after the RIBA Silver Medal submissions (theres still work to do on it!). Try and get hold of some red/cyan anaglyph glasses if you can, its much better in 3D!

It’s been a while, here’s some of whats been happening… Awards and Nominations I was honoured for my work this year with the Fitzroy Robinson prize for drawing, and a nomination for the RIBA silver medal. As far as I know, it’s the first time a film-based project has even been considered for either of these awards, so its really exciting to see a change in how people...

D&AD Student Awards →
Well I didn’t win a pencil, but am ‘In Book’, which is better than it sounds (top 6!). The other entries seem to respond more directly to the brief and are much more design-y, so I’m very happy to be up there at all. So now I have to decide whether to pay the £50 to attend the award ceremony..

ink
aaaaargh, I have become a victim of the epson ink conspiracy; despite fitting perfectly into the slots and being essentially the same, T0711 is apparently NOT the same as T0711H. I would try replacing the chips, but its not my printer, so if anyone’s printer takes the T0711, T0712, T0713 or T0714 (the ones with the cheetahs on them), let me know and you can have them at knockdown prices! Password = unit15 This match has taken a day and a half, but despite the obviously incorrect focal length, I’m very pleased with it. I had a lot of problems with the camera turn and automatic tracking. In the end I manually tracked the shot (about 80 points in total) before performing the solve. In compositing, I has to slightly fake the perspective to compensate for the focal length:...

The most successful bits are the long view over the rooftops, the pitched roof towards the end, and the strange creature on the floor. With a stereo base of 80mm, objects between 3 and 10m away seem to give the best 3D impression. There are also some things...
